Police investigate malicious damage to property following protests

Charlestown detectives are currently investigating a case of malicious damage to property following the hostile Charlestown protests this past month.

According to Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Lizzy Arumugam, the complainant alleged that on May 15 at around 20:45 he was traveling along the N11 past Laingsnek Street (Train Bridge) when he was forced off the road by a group of around 50 people.

He alleged the road was blocked off with large concrete slabs, and some of the protestors had weapons with them.

One of the protestors allegedly fired a gunshot at the truck, forcing him to exit his truck and hide away in a nearby veld.

The suspects proceeded to steal his belongings from the truck before setting both the truck and trailer on fire.

Police investigations will continue.
