UPDATE: N11 remains closed due to on-going protest action

Motorists are still being urged to seek alternative routes if travelling between Newcastle and Volksrust today (May 16) as protesters continue to block-off the road at Charlestown.

The protest has caused a severe traffic congestion along the N11 Majuba Pass and motorists are currently being diverted from the N11 to the P211 (Memel road to Johannesburg) as the situation remains volatile and hostile.

Motorists are also being urged to avoid using the dirt road between Wakkerstroom and Newcastle after multiple trucks and vehicles have gotten stuck in the mud, after the heavy torrential rainfalls experienced on Sunday.

The exact reason for the protest remains unclear at this stage, but all emergency services, including RTI and SAPS, remain on scene trying to control the situation.
