Newcastle police arrest woman for reporting false kidnapping case

A case of perjury was opened against the complainant, and she appeared before the Newcastle Magistrate Court.

Newcastle SAPS have arrested and charged a young woman for perjury after she opened a false case of kidnapping and murder at the Newcastle police station.

According to the complainant, she had given birth to a baby boy and after being discharged from the hospital, she and the baby were kidnapped by a group of unknown men while waiting for a lift in front of the hospital.

She further alleged that the men approached her and offered to give her a lift home. They then allegedly proceeded to blind fold her and take her and her baby to an unknown location.

She claimed they murdered her son before dropping her off along the side of the road, where she was found by a motorist who took her to the police station to report the crime.

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Lizzy Arumugam confirmed that a kidnapping case was opened in Newcastle on April 30.

“It was soon discovered that the complainant had produced a false statement after leads were pursued and inquiries were done at the hospital during the original investigation,” she said.

A case of perjury was opened against the complainant and she appeared before the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on May 3.

Police investigations are continuing.
