Man arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm

The man was found with a 9mm pistol and four rounds of ammunition, which he could not produce a licence for

The safe keeping of firearms came into the spotlight after a man was found with a pistol and ammunition that did not belong to him.

Wembezi police received information about a 32-year-old suspect and the firearm on the afternoon of May 1.

The man was located in VQ Section and searched.

He was found with a 9mm short pistol and four rounds of ammunition, which he could not produce a licence for.

“Officers immediately checked on the status of the weapon and discovered that the firearm had not been reported stolen. The lawful owner has since been traced. He will face charges of failing to safe keep a firearm,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

The man was arrested and charged with being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court today (May 2).

The suspect has been profiled and the recovered firearm will be subject to ballistic testing.

“Firearm owners are advised to make sure that they are familiar with the laws pertaining to the safe keeping of their firearms and that they abide by them” said the Uthukela District Commissioner of Police Major General Jabulani Khumalo.
