Teenage boy raped in Matiwaneskop

A relative was arrested and is expected to appear in court tomorrow

The community of Matiwaneskop is still in shock after a 16-year-old boy was raped on Tuesday, January 3.

A case was opened the following day at Elandslaagte police station and the victim was then taken to Ladysmith Regional Hospital for medical attention.

A family member, aged 38, was arrested yesterday (January 10) and charged.

The accused is expected to appear in court tomorrow (January 12).

SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan has confirmed the incident. “The Ladysmith Family Violence, Child Protection & Sexual Offences Unit is investigating a case of rape after a 16-year-old was raped in the Matiwaneskop area on the evening of Tuesday 2023-01-03. It is alleged that the victim was alone at the time of the incident, when the suspect forcefully entered the premises and raped the victim.”

The provincial organiser of people living with HIV, Mr Sakhile Xaba, said that the Civil Society Forum and Department of Social Development will be picketing outside the court in support of the victim and his family.
