Suspected murderers, rapists nabbed during police operations

Firearms, ammunition and drugs were confiscated during the Safer Festive Season Operations

A combined force of police officers from the Uthukela district were part of Safer Festive Season Operations that were conducted during the past weekend (November 12 and 13).

During these crime prevention operations, a total of 45 people were arrested for various offences.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan explains: “The arrested suspects were between the ages of 23 and 56 and were detained for offences ranging from murder, attempted murder, rape, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, house robbery, business robbery, possession of drugs, culpable homicide, stock theft, common robbery, common assault, shoplifting and drunken driving.”

During one of the operations carried out by intelligence operatives in Bergville, a man was questioned about the three firearms in his possession.

“The man was in possession of a valid licence for one of the three firearms. It was established that he failed to hand in a shotgun and a revolver that belonged to a deceased family member. The firearms have been confiscated, and further investigation is being conducted,” explained Khan.

All the detained suspects appeared in court on Monday (November 14).

As the busy festive season approaches, police will be poised to curb crime.

“All our festive season operations are being intensified,” said Uthukela District Commissioner Major General Jabulani Khumalo.
