A volatile situation has unfolded in the Bhareni area in Osizweni this morning as protestors have gathered with tyres and rocks, demanding that three men be immediately released from police custody.

This comes after police arrested three suspects in connection to the double murder which occurred at the Newcastle Taxi Rank on Terminus Street on Monday (October 17).

According to official sources, it was believed the victims robbed a taxi driver of money and his cellphone before attempting to flee the area.

The taxi driver alerted several other drivers of the incident, and ordered that the ‘criminals’ be found and dealt with accordingly.

The two men are believed to have been traced and brought back to the Newcastle Taxi Rank, where they were seemingly beaten and stabbed to death by ‘unknown’ taxi drivers, who then dumped their bodies along Terminus Street.

Fellow taxi drivers and members of the community are upset about the arrest and have congregated around the Bhareni area demanding the men be released.

An official police source has confirmed the arrests but stated that no official charges have been filed as yet, and that police were currently questioning the three suspects as to their involvement in the murders.

A source at the scene confirmed the protest was still relatively calm. However, he described the atmosphere as ‘volatile.’

“The situation is being closely monitored by SAPS, Traffic Services and other security entities to ensure that things do not get out of hand. But for now we are requesting that motorists try to avoid the area between Thekuplaza and Bhareni ,” he stated.

This is a developing story and we will update our readers as soon as more information becomes available!
