Police have recovered firearms and ammunition over the past weeks. Arrests have also been made as a result of these recoveries.
On September 9, officers from the Uthukela Crime Intelligence Unit and Ematsheni SAPS Visible Policing Unit traced a suspect to the Mazizini area of Bergville. The 47-year-old man was wanted for being in possession of an illegal firearm. He was arrested after being found in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition. The suspect made a brief appearance in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court last week.
During the early hours of the morning on September 10, an Intelligence-driven operation conducted in the Emakekeni area of Amangwe (Loskop) netted a 49-year-old suspect who was found in possession of an unlicensed pistol as well as ammunition. The Amangwe SAPS Visible Policing Unit and Uthukela Crime Intelligence Unit teamed up during the operation.
The next day, officers from the Amangwe SAPS Visible Policing Unit, Uthukela Crime Intelligence Unit, as well as members of the South African National Defence Force, were back in Amangwe, this time in the Nkomokazi area. The operation uncovered an unlicensed pistol and ammunition, and a 53-year-old man was arrested. He appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court last week.
On the same evening, the team found themselves in the Drycott area, where a 31-year-old man was found in possession of a .38 pistol and ammunition. He was arrested and faced charges in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court last week.
