20 years behind bars for robber

Justice has been served for a pair of brothers

It’s been a year since two brothers were attacked and stabbed while returning home from church on Sunday morning, August 23, 2021.

The pair was approached by a knife-wielding man with the intention of stealing a cellphone.

The elder brother was savagely attacked by the man.

“His younger brother attempted to help him, but the man turned on him in a fit of rage. He was determined to take the cellphone. He stabbed the boy, took his phone and ran off,” explained police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan.

After the incident was reported to police, the Estcourt detective tracing team was tasked with the investigation.

“The suspect was arrested a few days later. The stolen cellphone was recovered and so was the knife used during the incident. An identity parade was held, during which the suspect was positively identified,” added Khan.

Bail was opposed in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court and the suspect was remanded into custody until he was sentenced on August 31 this year.

“He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances and 10 years (five of which is to run concurrently with count one) for attempted murder. The effective sentence is 20 years behind bars,” concluded Khan.
