Pair of suspected business burglars shot dead

One suspect is still being sought by police

Less than two hours after robbing a business in the central business district (CBD), two of the suspects were killed in a shoot-out.

Yesterday (July 28), at about 17:30, a group of men barged into a retail store in the main street and robbed the business of cash and cell phones.

The group fled in a waiting getaway vehicle.

“Police were immediately alerted and information was shared with neighbouring stations and units. Information was received that the vehicle was heading towards Durban,” explained police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo.

Members from the Phoenix Task Team spotted the vehicle travelling along the M13 at about 19:00 and pursued the vehicle.

The suspects fled towards the St John’s on-ramp where there was a shoot-out. Two suspects sustained fatal injuries and were declared dead at the scene. A 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition was found next to the deceased suspects,” added Constable Ngcobo.

In addition to the firearms and ammunition, police also recovered number of cell phones that were taken during the robbery in town.

The investigation conducted at the scene revealed that the firearm was taken during a robbery at KwaMashu robbery last month. Charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession of stolen property were opened for investigation at Pinetown SAPS. It is believed that one of the suspects managed to flee during the shootout and is currently being sought by police,” concluded Constable Ngcobo.
