No one is immune to the rising crime in Dundee’s central business district…
Not even the disabled.
Mr Pillay, a well-known figure in Dundee, was in town on his mobile wheelchair/scooter on Tuesday afternoon and went to JVs, opposite the Courier office in Beaconsfield Street, to order food.
Jonathan Naidoo of JVs said Mr Pillay is a regular customer. After he had received his food, he drove up to the entrance to the SPAR parking lot.
“We suddenly heard Mr Pillay shouting out. We rushed outside and he shouted that a so-called para (vagrant) had snatched his cellphone and runoff,” Naidoo said.
He, some of his staff and several passersby gave chase; they caught the suspect and subdued him. After returning the cellphone to Mr Pillay, the thief was taken to the police station, where a robbery charge was opened. Mr Pillay thanked all those who assisted him in retrieving his cellphone.
“We all must stand together to fight crime, regardless of the victim. Crime touches all of us,” Naidoo added.
