Sarel Cilliers learners make a ‘moot’ point at provincial competition

The learners were focused on getting their point across to the judging magistrates and presented sound legal arguments.

Sarel Cilliers learners travelled to Durban last week to take part in the Moot Court competition, which is an initiative between the Human Rights Commission and the Department of Education.
The learners are given a hypothetical case and must submit essays of argument for both sides, which is the first round of the competition. Cases are based on supporting human rights law and are aimed at the Constitutional Court level.
Learners who write winning essays then compete in the next round, where they are given training by human rights lawyers before appearing in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. Uyathandwa Hlatshwayo and Thobani Hlophe, with support from Lethokuhle Mndaweni, took part in the second round and appeared in the magistrate’s court on Saturday, where they presented arguments in support of the applicant and the respondent.

Winning their division in Durban, the team has now been selected to represent the province and will travel to Pretoria for the National Moot Court rounds to be held at the law faculty of the University of Pretoria. Winners of this round will then appear in the Constitutional Court on the final day of the competition.
Rugby:
Nzuzo Lembethe, a Grade 11 learner who plays fly-half and centre, has been selected to play for the Sharks 7s U/17 team to represent KZN. Nzuzo is one of the stand-out players in the Sarel Cilliers first team and the school is very proud of his success. Nzuzo will train with other players in Durban and will then tour with the Sharks 7s team. Sarel Cilliers wishes Nzuzo all the best for his future in rugby.
Sarel Cilliers had an eventful weekend, with other sports and cultural activities taking place. They hosted the Sharks Development Team, who used the school for the rugby selections for primary schools. The Sharks Development Team complimented the school on a well-organised weekend. It was a busy sports and culture weekend!
The hockey boys travelled to Ferrum High School for the Andre Fourie Tournament. One team represented the school, playing all their matches.
Football:
The soccer boys and girls went to Newcastle for the semi-finals of the soccer league. The girls did not fare well and lost 1-2 to Vryheid.
The boys were more committed and beat Ferrum 2-0, and then continued to defeat Vryheid Landbou 2-0 to win the tournament.
The rugby teams took part in the Rugby 7s on Friday and Saturday at Ferrum.
The boys played extremely well, giving it their all, with the U/17 boys dominating the opposition to win the tournament.
The U/15 boys achieved third place. Sarel Cilliers’ rugby boys are the team to keep an eye out for and continue to improve.
