Dundee High School reunion attracts hundreds of old boys and girls

One would be hard-pressed to find more patriotic and loyal past learners than DHS old boys and old girls.

The motto of Dundee High School (DHS) is ‘A small school with a big heart’, but its former pupils showed even bigger heart when over 600 of them converged over the weekend for a 1980s reunion.

People like Dr Riaan Bester, Josef Martin and Anthony Ware (one of the organisers of the weekend’s events) flew in from Canada, the USA and Ireland, respectively, to meet up for a kaleidoscopic weekend of nostalgia and fun. Others like Cheryl Marais (nee Nebbe) merely walked across Tatham Street, where she lives, to be at the reunion at the school where she now teaches.

Past teachers were also there, including former deputy principal Eric Landsberg, Thos Viljoen, Giel Adendorff, Sherlee Wade and Miss Hein. The weekend kicked off on Friday night at The Lantern Old Scholars Clubhouse for a ‘meet and greet’.
The fun continued on Saturday morning at the school, with an Amazing Race-style tour of the school that was arranged by Anthony Ware and his team.
There was much chatter and laughter, with some of the old rascals taking much delight pointing out where they used to ‘catch skelm smokes.’

The hall was packed to capacity on Saturday evening, with photo memorabilia from the 1980s and an address by current principal Barries Smit, who expressed his gratitude to the old scholars for caring about their alma mater.
A fund-raising drive is underway to help with an upgrade at the school and the building of an astroturf sports field.
Anthony Ware and former pupil Paul Fouche said they were in admiration of the pristine condition of DHS, which is a credit to the staff and learners.
80s-style music filled the hall!
Outside, meat sizzled on braai stands and more memories were made.
