Dundee residents commit to recycling in a bid to clean up the town

So-called refuse ‘pickers’ will now have an opportunity to get involved in recycling in a more organised manner which will be beneficial to all.

A commitment to recycling waste has resulted in a commitment between Strathmore Park residents, the Endumeni Municipality and Mpilenhle Recycling from Newcastle that will not only clean up the environment but also fuel job creation.

At a follow-up meeting last week with a committee representing Strathmore Park residents, Phila Dlamini (Production Director) at Mpilenhle Recycling explained that the company, founded by three young entrepreneurs, operates buyback centres in Newcastle, Dundee, Glencoe, and Madadeni providing employment opportunities to around 72 young people.

“This venture has helped to extend financial incentives to over 680 community members engaged in recycling activities. Currently, Mpilenhle Recycling is recovering an average of 423 tons of various recyclable materials per month, contributing to an annual recovery rate of 5,075 tons across the Amajuba, Umzinyathi, and Zululand districts.”

In collaboration with the Endumeni Municipality, Mpilenhle Recycling will from August  embark on a separation-at-source project which entails the engagement of more than 20 waste pickers from the townships and surrounding areas including Strathmore Park.

As part of this Initiative plastic bags will be provided to the community of Strathmore Park for recycling collection, facilitated by the dedicated waste pickers. “This recycling programme underscoring our commitment to sustainable waste management practices and community empowerment,” Dlamini said.

Strathmore Park residents are very positive about the recycling programme and believe it will help alleviate the problem of ‘pickers’ rustling through black refuse bags left on pavements to recover material that they wish to sell to recycling companies.
