Sarel Cilliers High to host Drakensberg Boys Choir

If you have never had the opportunity to listen to the Drakensberg Boys Choir, this is an event not be missed, as they are exceptional!

It was a typical mid-winter morning on Saturday, with an early cold start developing into a dusty, windy day. However, despite the cold and dusty conditions, the soccer festival players were fit and ready to show off their skills. Sarel Cilliers hosted a first-of-its-kind soccer festival, attended by many of the local schools. With 57 games played, using the Sarel Cilliers and Glencoe Primary School fields, the day was a resounding success and enjoyed by all.
The results were as follows… U/13 girls: Amajuba Primary – gold, St Dominic’s – silver; U/13 boys: 1st – Uelzen Primary, 2nd – St Dominic’s Primary; U/15 girls: 1st – Dundee High School, 2nd – Sarel Cilliers High School; U/15 boys: 1st – Empathe Combined, 2nd – Ethangeni; U/17 boys: 1st – Thalana High School, 2nd – Dundee High School; Open ladies: 1st – Thalana High School, 2nd – Dundee High School; Open boys: 1st – Dundee Secondary School, 2nd – Dundee High School.
The tournament ended in an exciting finale that had the spectators on the edge of their seats, showing some excellent ball skills and very talented players on both sides of the field. Well done to all the players and the organisers. It was a great day! Many thanks to the sponsors, Orange Grove, for contributing to the day’s success.
Science Expo
Two Grade 8 learners and one Grade 11 learner took part in the Science Expo last week. It has been some years since the school took part in the Science Expo, which involves a great deal of commitment and hard work from the learners and educators. Congratulations to Shiveshen Moodley in Grade 11, who received a bronze medal for his project.
Tennis
Tennis was played in Vryheid over the weekend, with Sarel Cilliers playing Vryheid High School and Newcastle High School.
11 learners played 31 games, winning 24 games. Experienced players Kwanele Msane, Tristan Swanepoel, Siddeeq Buckus and Cruz Nair carried the day for Sarel Cilliers to win the tournament. With many new players on the tennis team, it was an excellent opportunity for the players to gain valuable experience on the court, playing both singles and doubles matches.
Cricket
Girls’ cricket is up and running. Last week, in the match against Vryheid High School, Sarel Cilliers won the match. They were chasing 51 runs and ended up scoring 60 runs with two overs to spare; a great start to the season. The team did not fare so well against Ferrum High School over the weekend and lost the match. With many new players on the team, each match is a welcome learning experience, with girls’ cricket gaining momentum and improving with each match.
This coming Friday, for the second year, Sarel Cilliers will host a choir festival with guest performances by the Drakensberg Boys Choir. School choirs will compete in the ‘Battle for the Drums’, performing songs they hope will impress the esteemed judges. Tickets are R100 pp, available at the school office. Tickets will be on sale at the door, but seating is limited, so book early. Doors open at 17:30.
