Plans to twin Dundee with fellow Dundees

Asked how the town will attract such investment amid failing infrastructure (the poor condition of roads in especially the industrial areas, lack of street lighting and water shedding), Mayor Ndlovu said he has met with ‘several relevant MECs in KZN to call for assistance as most small towns need to be rejuvenated’.

Plans are afoot to boost the local economy by setting up twinning agreements with Dundee towns in Scotland and Australia.

The strategy was revealed by Mayor, Siyabonga Ndlovu, during an exclusive interview with the Courier at the Dundee July event on Saturday as he stressed that he and his Council are ‘fully aware’ of the many challenges faced by Endumeni residents and businesses amid an economic downturn following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I drive around town and I see what’s going on. I see that the old Ford building has been empty for two years. A KwikSpar has closed down. There are empty shops, and people and small businesses are struggling. But I believe by setting up these agreements with the ‘other Dundees’ we can encourage some kind of outside investment we desperately need’.

He admitted that ‘access to water is a huge concern’ and although this is the competency of the Umzinyathi District Municipality, Endumeni is also taking steps to consider the installation of boreholes via a private company to help ease the crises.

He cited Glencoe’s multi-million Rand private hospital development as a ‘massive positive for Endumeni’. “This will later include a mall which is incredibly exciting and helps jobs. I don’t like to see  our people forced to seek work out of town and there is a lack of opportunities here.”

“Events like the Dundee July – blessed with wonderful weather – are great attractions as it bring people here who would not normally visit our small town. It is also a chance for our small businesses and craftspeople to showcase their talent. We appreciate the publicity this Dundee July brings.”
