Seven men arrested, illegal firearms, ammunition seized in SAPS operation

The National Deployment Operations have seen police members from other provinces deployed in the Umzinyathi District to help root out crime with the seizing of illegal firearms high on the agenda.

Seven men found in possession of illegal firearms were arrested in the early hours of today (Monday)  in the Ekombe area in the Umzinyathi District.

Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana, Umzinyathi SAPS spokesperson, said intelligence gathering reported that a murder was about to be committed in the Ekombe area and SAPS responded swiftly through the national deployment team. Six men aged between 27 and 75 were found with high-calibre firearms including an AK47 rifle, a 308 hunting rifle and three pistols all with ammunition.

The operation further proceeded to a second target where another suspect was arrested after being found in possession of an AK47 rifle and a .38 special revolver with ammunition. All seven suspects were detained and will soon appear in the Greytown Magistrate Court.

The District Commissioner Major General Francis Slambert congratulated all the members involved in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
