Dud street lights blamed on crime spike in Dundee residential areas

Thieves are taking advantage of the lack of street lighting in many areas to carry out their criminal activities.

The lack of streetlights has been blamed for yet another theft from a house on Tandy Street early on Saturday morning when copper pipes were stolen.
This is the fourth time in several weeks that the house has been targeted by thieves who previously made off with tools and other items.
Last month, security officers responded to an alert.
They managed to locate one of the two thieves, who then evaded arrest by taking advantage of the dark streets.
There have been no streetlights in the Tandy / Victoria Street area for almost four years. Previously, the fault was blamed on cable theft.
The homeowner, who did not wish to be named, said she has spent thousands of rands to beef up security, yet the area is still being targeted.
“The streets are very dark and in winter, with the long nights, residents are very vulnerable to thieves,” she lamented.
