Brave Impi warriors take on the toughest of routes

The Impi is the brainchild of local bike enthusiasts Craig van Heerden and Willem Wentzel, who have brought on board top sponsors to make it a memorable weekend for the riders.

What started off as ‘a small weekend of adventure riding’ in the Elandskraal valley, with around 180 competitors, has magnified into a huge event of hard enduro that attracts almost 700 riders.
That’s the history of the Impi Enduro which was held last weekend in the rough but scenic mountains around Bergville.

As the route undertaken by the various Impis follows tribal land, Craig and Willem have made sure that they have forged relationships with traditional leaders and have also assisted local orphanages and schools with donations of food and other items.

The riders showed fearless skill on the treacherous route.

Organisers, riders and their back-up teams camped out over the weekend and enjoyed the bracing mountain air.
Following the three days of riding, the following results were returned in the gold class:
1. William-Waide Slater, KTM, in a total time of 04:32:58,
2. Heinrich Aust, GAS GAS, in 04:40:27,
3. David Clark, KTM, 04:43:06.370.
Certainly, the Impi is one of the area’s biggest sporting attractions, ‘bringing much-needed sporting tourists here’.
