Endumeni municipality rejects ‘malicious rumours over unlicensed firearms’

“Endumeni Municipality followed all necessary processes and procedures for the application and licensing of firearms, as per SAPS regulations."

Endumeni Local Municipality has fervently denied allegations that ‘some traffic officers could be running around with unlicensed firearms’.

It was reported last week that the Endumeni Residents Association (ERA) alleged that unlicensed firearms and ammunition were handed over to the Traffic Department after nine Glock pistols had ‘sat in a safe for six years after being purchased by the municipality’.

Endumeni Municipal Manager S Ntombela said the municipality had applied to the acquisition of firearms on November 15, with terms that the old firearms were still being utilised pending approval and would be surrendered to the SAPS for disposal as per the Firearms Control Act as soon as new firearms were issued to officers (as constituted in the Firearms Control Act).

“Further to that, an approval to utilise new firearms was obtained on December 14, 2023.

“The firearms in question were received from the service provider and sent for inspection to the Dundee firearms officer (DFO). The old firearms were surrendered to the Dundee DFO in May and a process of dispatching new firearms to members was started.

“The new firearms are registered under Endumeni Municipality and therefore the malicious allegation that Endumeni Municipality is operating with unlicensed firearms is purposefully meant to tarnish the image of the municipality.”
