Dundee SAPS ramp up preparedness ahead of elections

"I want to stress the importance of neutrality and non-involvement in political activities, reiterating that the primary mandate is to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral process," - Major General Frances Slambert.

Police have ramped up their preparedness in the run-up to the May 29 General Elections, with officers being warned to ‘keep neutral’ and that ‘corruption will not be tolerated’.
Addressing a combined parade at The Oval on Friday, Umzinyathi District Commissioner Major General Francis Slambert stressed the importance of all SAPS officials maintaining a ‘neutral stance’ as the country heads for the most pivotal elections since the dawn of democracy.

She further introduced two new station commanders who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their roles.
The officials welcomed the new commanders with applause.
One is Greytown SAPS station commander Colonel TG Sithole and the other is Colonel Mpungose, who takes up the position of station commander in Nquthu.

Captain Manaka was introduced as an operational commander of the national intervention operation, who is based in Nquthu but will serve the entire Umzinyathi District.
Slambert commended the officials for their hard work and dedication, highlighting the significance of the upcoming elections and the critical role the police play in maintaining law and order.

She emphasised that:
– Police officials must remain neutral and impartial during the electoral process;
– Involvement in political activities is strictly prohibited;
– The primary focus is to prevent incidents of violence and ensure a smooth electoral process; and
– Corruption will not be tolerated in any form.
Representatives from the Independent Electoral Commission, Department of Education, Department of Community Safety & Liaison, Home Affairs, and the Liquor Board were also at the parade.
Police have also conducted flash inspections of all legal (and illegal) outlets in the CBDs of various towns and townships.
Illegal outlets have been closed and those with licences checked to ensure compliance with the liquor laws.
