Elderly woman perishes in Wasbank house fire

The victim, 70, was alone in the house in the Wasbank area when the blaze started said Phumlani Ntombela, Endumeni's disaster manager.

An elderly woman was burnt beyond recognition when her Wasbank house caught on fire in the early hours of last Tuesday morning.
Phumlani Ntombela, Endumeni’s Disaster Manager, said the fire brigade responded as soon as the call for help was received, but could not save the 70-year-old or the house.
She was alone at the time.

Ntombela noted that Wasbank has grown rapidly in recent years, with especially areas like Kameelkop experiencing a population increase.
“We have already started with the establishment of a disaster, fire and rescue satellite station in Wasbank to ensure swift response, as Dundee is far and dangerous to drive to at night,” Ntombela said.
“Mayor Ndlovu is now also intervening to ensure that she gets a dignified send-off.”

Ntombela warned that with winter coming closer, residents should exercise ‘extreme vigilance’.

“We are pleading with people to be more careful in this winter and ensure that they don’t leave candles unattended , keep the Mbawulas out at night and ensure safe electricity connection in their house,” he said.

uPhumlani Ntombela okuhlelo lokuphathwa kwezinhlekelele kumasipala wase Endumeni uphinde wanxusa abantu ukuthi baqikelele kulobu busika futhi baqikelele ukuthi bashiya amakhandlela egadiwe, bagcine izimbawula ngaphandle ebusuku futhi baqinisekise ukuthi ugesi uxhumekile ngendlela ephephile endlini zabo.
