Dundee family endures smelly situation following sewer leak

“We are forced to keep certain windows and doors to prevent the bad smell from coming into the inside of the house.”

A Dundee family residing in Hajee Jamaal Street, Peacevale, are outraged with a continuous sewer leak which has seen effluent flow into their home.

They are now concerned for their family’s health, including small children. The family, who did not want to be named for fear of intimidation, said they moved to the house in 2020 but have experienced issues with a sewer line in the field behind their property.

“We have called Umzinyathi on numerous occasions to attend to the issues. We were told that the only permanent solution is to have the pipeline replaced which will take time. But meantime we have to cope with sewage in our garden and now in our house,” said one family member.

The residents said the situation is so bad that they have to clean up the outside property, the kitchen the bathroom and other areas in the house.

Desperate, the family contacted the Courier who went to the house. Cllr Naresh Gopie and the Residents’ Association were contacted and Cllr Gopie assisted and asked Umzinyathi’s technical department to attend to the problem urgently. Umzinyathi Municipality was contacted for comment and this will be published once received.
