Residents complain of grave situation at Dundee cemetery

Residents were shocked to find that the cemetery was in 'state'.

Residents of Endumeni were shocked when they visited the local cemetery in Colley Street to lay flowers on the graves of loved ones.
They found the condition of the cemetery to be far from tranquil.
The long grass and general lack of maintenance has caused many tombstones to be completely covered, while others have been knocked over by vandals or thieves.
The Wall of Remembrance, where the ashes of many deceased are kept, is also in a poor condition.
The December and early January storms also caused damage.
Asked to comment, Municipal Public Accounts chairperson Cllr Naresh Gopie said he thanks members of the community who contacted him to alert him of the ‘unsavoury scenes’, and said he would be following up.
“The heavy storms meant that workers could not get into the graveyard to complete necessary work.
“Also, there was a lot of damage in Glencoe, which also had to be attended to, but we will be seeing to the Dundee cemetery.”
When the Courier visited the graveyard last week, access was gained through a gate in Colley Street.
There is a security guard, but there were no signs of any workers.

Many older graves are damaged by intruding vegetation.
Long grass has ‘invaded’ the Dundee graveyard.
The Wall of Remembrance has also become overgrown.
