Dundee’s teen editor and broadcaster is making continental waves

The award ceremony celebrates young Africans who are dedicated to uplifting the image of the continent through various works to inspire change and help the development of Africa.

Teenage magazine editor and broadcaster protégé Muhle Khambule has won the prestigious Art & Culture category in the African Youth of the Year awards in Nigeria.

The Africa Youth Awards were launched in 2014 as a Pan African awards scheme to honour inspiring young Africans who are championing the development of the continent in diverse fields.
An excited Muhle (16) told the Courier that he was thrilled to bring home the continental award to Dundee.
It was while he was still at Ichthus Christian School that the aspiring publicist pioneered Smashing Kids News – his own YouTube channel focused on news for learners.

Born in Dundee, the bright teenager later moved on to Maritzburg College and last year launched Teen Mag SA – the country’s official online teen magazine.

According to Muhle, the magazine got off the ground with help from ENCA, Kidz Bop and Ndlovu Youth Choir.
“Often, children or specifically teenagers are told that they are limited to their school responsibilities to achieve success, but we want to create something that will relate to every youth in the country,” explained Muhle.

He added that the magazine is a source of amazing quality entertainment brought to you by ‘Teen on a Mission’. “The magazine is not just a piece of paper with information; it’s a clarification that their journeys as the youth start here and that we can create ourselves.”

He added that the magazine will ‘create a positive and equal world and environment for us’. The magazine features fashion trends, rising teen celebrities and general information.
Muhle thanked everyone who has supported him on his journey thus far and hopes the award will encourage other local teens to ‘reach for the stars’. However, his vision does not end at magazines – upon completing matric, he hopes to study aviation or criminology at university. Whatever Muhle tries his hand at is bound to be a success.
