Shocking littering impacts on Endumeni’s municipal services

An appeal has been made for the public to be more responsible when it comes to indiscriminate littering.

Indiscriminate littering is impacting on service delivery. So says Cllr Naresh Gopie, who also serves on Endumeni Council’s executive committee. Gopie said he was left ‘feeling dirty and shocked’ when he saw under what conditions electricians had to carry out repairs following a power outage that affected a large part of town last Saturday.
“The fault was at a substation on the corner of Smith and Victoria streets, near the taxi rank, and the human and domestic waste and other unmentionables that our electricians had to wade through to access the electrical box left me astounded,” Gopie said.

He said that while the municipality could increase its cleansing capabilities, ‘ordinary residents should also come to the party’ simply by not littering.
“Think before you simply discard a piece of paper or tin from your car or while walking.
“You are impacting on the environment. Also, during heavy rain (as we have experienced), these mountains of litter will wash into the gutters and block the storm-water drainage system. From there, homes and businesses will be flooded.
“Whatever you do, there is a reaction.”

Previously, the Courier accompanied electricians to a substation in Wilson Street, where persistent public urination had rusted away the cover of the box, exposing it to the elements.
The stench also made for very unpleasant working conditions for electricians.
