Aviemore Colliery ends contracts of up to 40 employees

Buffalo Coal was once one of the biggest employers in the area but since the new owners have taken over, most of the work on the mine has been contracted out

Around 40 Aviemore Colliery employees will have their services terminated this week, following the conclusion of a ‘temporary assignment’.
Bonani Ndlovu (director: Legal & Corporate Affairs with Buffalo Coal) denied that the workers had been retrenched.
“It is incorrect that these are retrenchments, which by their own nature and legislative provisions are triggered by the employer’s operational requirements, as regulated by the Labour Relations Act,” Ndlovu told the Courier.
“The process in question is an end to a temporary assignment which the employees, who were signed up in the last 60 days, had to undertake for the employer.
“That assignment came to an end, effectively on September 15. We confirm that Aviemore Colliery still has more than 100 employees at present, who are rendering their services to the employer, largely contributing to the local economy.”
Buffalo Coal’s processing plant at Coalfields is also due to be operational again within a week.
