Turning so-called junk into sought after treasure

With Johan (van Rooyen) being Johan's (Potgieter) father-in-law, the auctioneering business is certainly a family affair, with Van Rooyen's wife, Adel, and daughters, Nicolene and Vicky, all involved.

One man’s junk is another man’s treasure…
That is the motto by which Johan van Rooyen and Johan Potgieter swear by, as they get ready for the second Glencoe auction.

Van Rooyen and Potgieter recently founded Glencoe Auctioneers after completing all the necessary registration requirements and held their first auction at their warehouse in Boundary Road in the Glencoe industrial area.

Having founded a second dealership business in Wasbank some years ago and moving to Glencoe two years ago, Van Rooyen said that going into auctioneering was a natural progression.

“There is definitely a need, as many people want to turn their unwanted goods into much-needed funds. We plan to have regular auctions, usually on a Saturday morning, which we want to be family-orientated occasions, as we are a family business.”
He said he was pleasantly surprised with the turnout at the first auction that was advertised in the Courier, where a range of goods were auctioned – from farming implements to tools, furniture toys and just about everything else too.

“In future, we will hold separate auctions for farming equipment and household goods. We know that many people are focused on household goods, but it’s amazing what people are looking for – just because you may think something is worthless, it actually means something to someone else,” he said.
Online auctions are also to be held and readers should be on the lookout by checking the Courier and enquiring at the Glencoe Second Hand Dealers shop (adjacent to the ABH Home).

The next auction in Boundary Road will be from 08:00 on October 7, when the doors will open before the sale starts at 09:00.
Refreshments are also sold courtesy of The Rusty Bucket. “Anyone wanting to sell something at the auction is welcome to call us. We can deliver and give advice on what price one can expect for one’s goods.”
