Residents welcome new signs to keep trucks out of their area

Suburban residents have been up in arms for months over heavy trucks travelling in their areas.

New warning signs have been erected in the Douglas Street area following an outcry from residents over heavy trucks and buses using the route through the residential area.

One resident told the Courier that coal trucks turn onto Douglas Street from the Nyanyadu road, to avoid the speed bumps in Union Street.

“The trucks were rumbling through our area, down Union Street and on to Argyle Street, Victoria and Willson streets to the coal processing plant on the R33,” the resident complained.

“The trucks have not only been damaging the road – parts of Douglas Street have since disintegrated – but they also pose a danger to residents of the town.” Cllr Naresh Gopie said he was made aware of the concerns and contacted Traffic Chief Alfred Nsibande, who sent in a team to put up the warning signs that prohibit heavy vehicles from travelling on the road.

“Thank you, Traffic Chief Nsibande, for listening to the community of Douglas Street

. “Your commitment to serving our community is highly appreciated. “Not forgetting the team on the ground that did the work,” Cllr Gopie enthused.
