Taxi ‘strike’ in Glencoe prevents commuters, scholars from going to work and school

Residents have reacted angrily saying that they are 'entitled to choose their own mode of transport'

Taxi drivers in Sithembile, Glencoe, are this morning not taking commuters to work or scholars to school.

Witnesses said buses that usually transport learners to school were prevented from doing so. Private taxis that also ferry children in the morning were also stopped and one was said to have been damaged.

Stones were placed on the road and a large contingent of police were dispatched to the entrance of Sithembile.

According to commuters who spoke to the Courier, taxi operators do not want buses or private taxi operators to transport scholars and commuters.

A meeting has been called for in the town hall between various stake holders in a bid to reach an agreement.

This is a breaking story and updates will be provided as they become available.
