SANBS encourages donors to help alleviate declining blood stocks

Blood stock levels are fast decreasing, and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing for donors to help.

At the most recent blood clinic, which was held on July 19 at the Boulevard Centre, donors gave 19 units of blood (saving 36 lives).

Blood stock levels are fast decreasing, and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing for donors to help. Significantly higher[1]than-usual demand for blood has resulted in a drop in the SANBS’s Group O blood reserves.

You can donate blood if: You are between the ages of 16 and 75 years old (for first-time donors); you weigh a minimum of 50 kilograms (a minimum of 55kg for platelet donors); you are in good health; you lead a low-risk lifestyle; you consider your blood safe for transfusion; you have had a balanced meal within four hours of donating blood; you have not donated blood in the past 56 days (14 days for platelet donors); and your pulse is between 50-100 regular beats per minute.

SANBS staff will also screen you beforehand to determine your hemoglobin levels and blood pressure. Isn’t it time you became a ‘hero’.
