Public/ private sectors combine to fix road, leaks

A six-month water leak in the road impacted even more on the state of Catterall Drive with residents constantly turning to social and the Courier in a bid to get the authorities to attend to their complaints.

Public and private partnerships that help improve service delivery are fast becoming the norm in all towns in South Africa.
That is the opinion of Cllr Naresh Gopie (DA) who chairs the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) who this week oversaw a project to upgrade the much-maligned Catterall Drive in Craigieburn.

For over a year now, residents have complained bitterly about the state of this gravel road that, following the February floods was quickly reduced to a four-by-four track – as one resident described the road.
A six-month water leak in the road impacted even more on the state of Catterall Drive with residents constantly turning to social and the Courier in a bid to get the authorities to attend to their complaints.

However, with Umzinyathi District Municipality (UDM) not having access to a TLB to dig up the road to access the leaking pipe (their TLB was out of commission) and Endumeni Municipality being short of funds to attend to the road, the problems persisted.
“The only hope was to call on the private sector to assist us. And can only complement our local business people for jumping at the opportunity to give back to their town,” said Cllr Gopie.

*The problem has since persisted and the leak sprung up again. And again the private sector – businesses and individuals – have confirmed that they would be taking action to seek a permanent solution.
