Another cellphone scam in operation at shopping centres

Numerous cases have been opened at SAPS police stations police are appealing to the public to be more vigilant at all supermarkets.  

The SAPS has warned the public of another syndicate operating at shopping centres where scammers are posing as Vodacom employees doing promotions on cell phone products and requesting your cell phone number.

They then remove the cellphone battery and then scan the i.m.i.  (IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a 15-17-digit code that is given to every mobile phone. This number is used by service providers to uniquely identify valid devices

The battery is the phone put back.  The victim is then told to keep their cell phones off for two hours for the registration of the promotion and when the phone is restarted, users find that it has been hacked.

In this way, the scammer gains access to your bank account, and money is withdrawn. Numerous cases have been opened at SAPS police stations police are appealing to the public to be more vigilant at all supermarkets.
