Call for vaccinations to stave off mumps outbreak

She added that the Government vaccine schedule does not vaccinate against German measles and chicken pox. “Please vaccinate children to avoid them getting these illnesses

An outbreak of the highly contagious virus that causes mumps has prompted health officials to urge parents to vaccinate their children against the disease.

Sister Gaby Stein of Mpati Pharmacy warned that infections have led to some schools closing in the rural areas in the district.

“Mumps can lead to complications in boys and can lead to fertility issues.

It can affect adults and children alike and is painful.”

She added that the Government vaccine schedule does not vaccinate against German measles and chicken pox. “Please vaccinate children to avoid them getting these illnesses. The recent vaccination campaign by the Department of Health was for measles only not mumps.”

Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, headaches, muscle pain, pain when eating, and pain in the ear, jaw, and chin that spreads to both sides of the face.
