All quiet in Endumeni district as day of national shutdown dawns

There is a heavy police presence in town backed up by traffic officers

The Endumeni area is, so far, all quiet as the country wakes up to the national shutdown called for by the EFF to protest against load-shedding and for President Ramaphosa to step down.

There was activity outside the EFF offices on McKenzie Street last night but nothing that called for SAPS action. SAPS and security officials were out in force patrolling the town.

This morning, a few posters are visible on the pavement near the EFF offices.

Earlier tyres, that had been found on corners at two spots in the CBD, were removed and taken to the police station.

This morning the area appears quiet with schools that were in any event closed ahead of tomorrow’s public holiday, Human Rights Day.

SAPS and traffic patrol cars are about the only vehicles moving around the CBD with, of course, the ubiquitous piles of litter fluttering in the gutters on Victoria Street.

SAPS has vehicles monitoring the entrance to Dundee from Newcastle/Glencoe and reports are that the roads to Vryheid, Newcastle, and Ladysmith are thus far open. The Nquthu road is also reported to be all clear.

Updates will be provided when these become available.

Not many vehicles travelling in the CBD this morning save for SAPS patrols.
