Mine, traffic reach agreement on Dundee coal truck route regulations

The mine has made provision for drivers to park their trucks overnight at Coalfields to not inconvenience residents.

Agreements have been reached between the Endumeni Traffic Department, Buffalo Coal and transport contractors to ensure that the recognised ‘coal route’ through the town is adhered to and the safety of residents is protected.

“At the same time we appreciate that Buffalo Coal is doing investment in our town and creating jobs. We need them and they need our roads. So we need to have a strong relationship that benefits all,” stressed Traffic Chief, Alfred Nsibande.

He emphasized that the agreed route was from the Nyanyadu road – from where coal is hauled from Magdalena and Aviemore Collieries – into Dundee via Argyle Street, Browning Street, on to Victoria Street, up to Willson Street and down Commercial Road to the Helpmekaar road to the processing plant at Coalfields.

“All transport contractors must be aware of this route and not deviate. Stickers should be displayed on trucks indicating that these are Buffalo Coal transporters.  We cannot have trucks roaming around residential areas and breaking up our roads. The Municipality does not have the money to fix roads ruined by trucks.”

Pat Lightfoot, Buffalo Coal general manager, said he welcomed the discussion with the Traffic Department and coal transporters. “We fully agree and are very keen to work closely with the Municipality as we need each other. We will ensure all stickers are displayed and that loads are covered. All our trucks are weighed to ensure these are operated within legislation and drivers breathalysed when leaving the mine.”

He said the mine had made provision for drivers to park their trucks overnight at Coalfields to not inconvenience residents. “What we do have are other mines using Dundee as a through route which we have no control of so they must all be made aware of the provisions. Other customers who do not travel here daily will also be informed of the route so we can ensure compliance.”
