Efforts stepped up to upgrade ‘pathetic state’ of roads in Avon industrial area

"It is a nightmare just driving to our place of business every morning.'

The state of the roads in the Avon Industrial Area has long been a sore point for business owners, who say that driving on these roads is like taking on the Dakar Rally.
A grader was finally dispatched to the area last Friday in an attempt to improve especially Cable Road and Brewery Road, where the tar has all but disappeared. Cllr Naresh Gopie, who chairs the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC), was sent to conduct an oversight inspection and was pleased that the grader operator, Ndumiso Dinisile, even interrupted his lunch break to help with other roads in the area – the state of which have been damaging vehicles in recent weeks.
“It is a nightmare just driving to our place of business every morning.
“We pay rates and expect a service.
Right now, we cannot see anyone wanting to invest in this industrial area, simply because of the road network,” said one businessman who declined to be named. Cllr Gopie admitted that ‘the municipality is hugely challenged by budget constraints, but is working hard to provide a better service’.
“We recognise the important role our business people play in our town in terms of their investment and employing staff.
We want to do our best for them, so this is why we are conducting regular oversight visits to ensure that infrastructure like roads is attended to,” Cllr Gopie told the Courier.
