Plans afoot to provide shelter to Glencoe commuters

"We have to stand in the rain when waiting for a taxi. The same applies in summer when we queue in the sun,"

Taxi commuters in Glencoe can look forward to more comfort, thanks to local activist Sydney Ramsey.
Upon realising that taxi users in Glencoe are forced to stand in the sun and rain, as there is no shelter and taxis stand at the rank adjacent to the Town Hall, Ramsey approached Corobrik to enquire if a shelter could be erected. “Commuters in Glencoe are subjected to all kinds of challenges because we have no taxi stand at the taxi rank,” explained Ramsey.
He added that Corobrik are willing to build the rank if the municipality gives them the go-ahead.
“Corobrik management told me that they never get any projects from the municipality pertaining to Glencoe; they only get projects for Dundee. This is so sad, because we could do with the upgrading of the town, as well as the taxi rank,” said Ramsey.
Nonhlanhla Mthethwa, a commuter from Glencoe, explained that when it rains, there is no shelter for them to use while waiting for a taxi.
“We have to stand in the rain when waiting for a taxi. The same applies in summer when we queue in the sun,” said Mthethwa.
She added that the elderly are also subjected to harsh weather conditions while waiting for taxis. Council was approached for comment, but none had been received at the time of going to print.
