Local man teaches children art and the history of Vryheid

Khanyi said the children were excited to visit the museum, a monument at the municipality, an old parliament building, tourism office and other places.

Bright Khanyi from Bhekuzulu is a man who is passionate about working with young people from all walks of life. He loves nothing more than teaching them everything related to art and the history of the town. Khanyi is a founder of the Buhlebethu Ratanang Development foundation.

He recently took it upon himself to teach young ones about the history of Vryheid as an aftercare programme. He took primary school learners from the Sasko and Bhekuzulu areas to show them all the old buildings in and around town, with the help of social workers and Ward 9 Councillor Madga Viktor (who also sponsored them for the day).

Khanyi said the children were excited to visit the museum, a monument at the municipality, an old parliament building, tourism office and other places.
He explained that he started this initiative early this year when he saw that vulnerable children ‘invest’ in negative things during school holidays. In September, the children took part in a Heritage Day event where they put on a play. Children who are part of the programme will travel to Durban in January for three weeks, where they will learn more about being on stage and being in a play. Thereafter, they will perform at uShaka Marine World.

Bright Khanyi works closely with school teachers, community members and the Department of Arts & Culture to help children.
