Young women celebrate purity

''They had a beautiful day where they could walk tall and be proud of their virginal status.''

Last week, a first-ever ceremony for ‘amatshitshi’ (virgins) was held at the new Lakeside Hall.

The ceremony was to crown Miss Amatshitshi 2022 in Lakeside and also stage a graduation ceremony for the ladies who have kept themselves ‘pure’ since they were children.
Young ladies gathered at the hall with pride to receive their certificates. They also strutted their stuff in special attire down the runway in the hopes of being crowned Miss Amatshitshi 2022.

Mam Khosi, who caters for and looks after the amatshitshi, mentioned that, “They had a beautiful day where they could walk tall and be proud of their virginal status. I would like other young girls who are still pure to look up to these ladies and not be influenced by the world we live in. They must know that these days, it is very risky to have a boyfriend, because some men want to use them. They have multiple partners or they are married. It is still possible to stay pure in this day and age.”

Mam Khozi worked alongside her assistants, Nombulelo and Hlengiwe, to ensure that the day was a resounding success. She thanks the parents and all the people who contributed to the event.

Sinikiwe Madela took the crown for Miss amatshitshi 2022 in adults category while Malibongwe Xaba  was crowned Miss amatshitshi 2020 in the junior category.
