The municipality stated that following a period of unusually heavy rainfall in early 2023, the Newcastle area faced significant flooding, which severely damaged roads and storm water systems.
Recognising the urgent need for repair, the municipality has secured funding for the 2024/2025 financial year and set to implement the following scope of work:
- Rehabilitation of 284.66 meters of road.
- Preparation and removal of the existing concrete surface.
- Construction of robust base layers.
- Surfacing the road with 30mm continuous graded asphalt.
- Road width will vary between 8.5 meters and 8.7 meters.
- Maintenance of existing concrete kerbs.
- Cleaning of the existing stormwater system.
- Road marking upon completion of construction works.
“The Newcastle Municipality is dedicated to improving service delivery, regardless of the challenges faced by local government,” said the municipality’s spokesperson, Mthandeni Myende.
Mayor, Cllr Xolani Dube, emphasised the importance of the rehabilitation effort, noting that effective road infrastructure is vital to the daily lives of commuters and plays a significant role in fostering local economic growth.
“Infrastructure is one of our most valuable assets, and we are determined to tackle these challenges head-on,” he stated.
“This project represents not just a repair of the physical landscape but a renewed commitment to the community’s resilience and prosperity,” he concluded.
