Four CPF members charged with murder, including chairperson

Khulekani Hlatshwayo was beaten to death in December 2022.

Four members of the Newcastle Community Policing Forum (CPF) were arrested for murder on September 23, including the organisation’s chairperson, Ismaeel Dhalech.

Dhalech and his co-accused, Ebrahim Adams, Mahomed Ashraf and Yaseen Mohamed, made their first appearance in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on September 25.

They are charged with the murder of Khulekani Hlatshwayo (26) who was allegedly brutally beaten on December 24, 2022, and died on the way to hospital the next day.

Witnesses say the incident occurred after CPF members, together with other crime fighting organisations and residents responded to a report of a burglary in progress, and found Hlatshwayo on the roof of a house.

Describing the severity of the assault Hlatshwayo suffered, investigation officer, Detective Warrant Officer Henning de Meyer, said there were more than a hundred lacerations on Hlatshwayo’s body and there wasn’t a place on his body that didn’t have a mark.

CPF deputy secretary, Belinda Ellor, said the organisation will issue a full statement in due course.

Dhalech and his co-accused will apply for bail in the Newcastle Magistrate’s Court on September 27.
