Unisa campus set to boost Newcastle’s Metropolitan status

Excitement is building following the Newcastle Municipality joining forces with the University of South Africa (UNISA) to establish a ‘cutting-edge’ tertiary educational facility in the heart of the town.

According to the municipality’s communications department, this ambitious initiative is a cornerstone of Newcastle’s broader vision to evolve into a metropolitan hub by 2035.’

“This bold initiative is a testament to our unwavering commitment to transforming Newcastle into a thriving metropolitan area. By harnessing the power of education, we are unlocking the doors to economic growth, job creation, and unparalleled service excellence,” the municipality said.

Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube visited the construction site last week, which is situated at the old borough engineer’s offices, to see first-hand how the project is progressing.

Phase one, which focused on critical upgrades such as roof replacement, floor repairs, and plumbing enhancements, is already completed.

Phase 2 will concentrate on electrification, state-of-the-art ablution blocks, and modern flooring.

According to the municipality, the campus doors are set to open in October.

“Upon completion, this regional educational hub will not only serve Newcastle but also neighbouring towns, attracting students and stimulating local economic activity,” the municipality said.

“We are proud to emphasise that the project will have a direct impact on our community, saving families money on accommodation and travel while also boosting local revenue.”

“Our partnership with UNISA is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaborative governance and strategic partnerships. Together, we are shaping the future of Newcastle and paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous tomorrow.”

By 2035, Newcastle will indeed be a resilient and economically vibrant city, promoting service excellence to its citizens.
