Fun run has small turnout but big impact

“There may have been a small turnout, but it had a big impact for the elderly in Newcastle,” said Newcastle Organisation for the Aged (NAON) member, Ally Hoosen, on the fun run/walk hosted on Saturday.

The event brought young and old together for a morning of socialising and physical fitness, all while raising funds for NAON.

Hlelo Mntombela, who was among the youngest participants in the 5km fun run/walk, won first place, while 89-year old Leela Bhoodram received a R100 cash prize for being the eldest participant to complete the race.

“We sold hundreds of entry tickets to the fun run. Even though many people could not participate due to other commitments on the weekend, they still purchased a ticket to show their support for NAON, essentially making a donation to the organisation. The food stalls also did very well on the day,” said Hoosen.

“The event was a fundraising success that brought the community together and raised awareness for NAON and the good work the organisation does in supporting the elderly.”
