Wynand Coertzen: A daughter’s desperate plea to save her father’s life

At 76 well-known Newcastle resident, Wynand Coertzen, has fought many a fight to overcome health issues and is refusing to give up as he faces yet another one.

Wynand, who for years worked at both Nissan and Stucky Motors, where although he had a reputation as ‘die kwaai oom’, he was well-loved for this welcoming and friendly demeanour.

However, in recent years his positive outlook on life masked his countless battles with health challenges

After being diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure, Wynand has had to endure dialysis at least three times a week – a physically draining process that takes a significant toll on his body.

But despite this, he has kept up his spirits despite surviving the COVID-19 pandemic and countless visits to the hospital due to his failing kidneys, diabetes, and heart disease.

Wynand had recently been in a coma for three weeks after his heart condition took a turn for the worse during his daughter’s wedding.

Despite the odds, he pulled through and again proved he would not give up his fight.

He is the proud father of three daughters and the proudest grandfather to five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; titles he holds near and dear to his heart.

With yet another wedding coming up, Wynand’s family is holding onto hope that he will be with them to celebrate the special occasion.

Currently, Wynand is facing yet another life-threatening challenge which his family says they simply cannot fight alone.

Due to the severe blood circulation issues in his legs, he is facing the possibility of having to amputate both his legs unless he undergoes a heart bypass with stents.

The cost of this surgery, however, far exceeds what his medical aid is willing to cover, leaving a financial burden on his family which they cannot afford.

Wynand and his wife currently live with one of their daughters as they are unable to care for themselves.

Despite her own financial struggles, she has gone above and beyond to care for them to the best of her ability but currently finds herself reaching out to her community to help her allow her father to continue fighting his battle.

The family has since created a back-a-buddy account https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/wynand-johannes-franois-coertzen and asking anyone who can help to visit the page for more details.

If you are able to contribute to Wynand’s medical costs, direct donations can be made to the following account:
– Account holder: CJJ Potgieter
– Capitec account number: 1535934970
– Reference: Wynand Coertzen

“God has kept my father alive for a purpose and I am determined to see him through this latest challenge. Any donation, no matter how small will help cover the cost of this life-saving surgery,” concluded his daughter, Karin Potgieter.
