Empowering women to ‘fight like a girl’

"Freedom cannot be achieved unless women have been emancipated from all forms of oppression." Nelson Mandela

Around 90 local women embraced the beauty of being a woman when the Pines Wedding and Conference Village last Wednesday (August 28) hosted a special Women’s Month Breakfast.

The event, which was hosted and organised by Champ Marketing and the Docrat Group, focused on the challenges women faced daily, whether in their personal lives or professional lives.

A-list guest speakers took to the podium to talk up and share some of their most special thoughts and inspiring stories, allowing every woman in attendance to leave the event with a brand new perspective on life.

Among these speakers were Charmaine Myburg (Principal of Ferrum High School), who explained the challenges of being a female in a male-dominated profession, and Dina Tseng (owner of Factory Plaza), who shared her journey of battling cancer and how this has helped her approach life more positively.

Adding a practical element to the event, representatives of The Newcastle Cougars Wrestling Club and Ithemba Security Services took centre stage and gave women basic self-defence skills to help protect themselves in dangerous situations.

“At Champ Group, we are passionate about empowering women to take control of their own safety and well-being,” said event organiser, Krystal Raghoo.

Hosting the ‘Fight Like a Girl’ event, according to her, was a powerful step in that direction.

“We wanted to create an environment where women could come together, learn vital self-defence skills, and draw strength from the incredible stories shared by our motivational speakers. Watching participants grow more confident, knowing they were better equipped to protect themselves, was inspiring. This event was more than just a gathering; it was a movement towards ensuring every woman feels empowered, strong, and unstoppable. We at Champ Group are proud to be part of this journey and remain committed to uplifting and supporting women in our community,” she concluded.
