Over 300 households to ‘see the light’ in KwaJimane

''We discourage illegal connections that pose a risk to human lives and also cripple the electricity supply."

Over 300 households in KwaJimane, on the outskirts of Vryheid, are set to ‘see the light’ within six months’ time… This after KZN Cogta MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi introduced the contractor who will implement an electrification project.
The electrification project is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to provide basic services such as electricity and water to rural communities. MEC Sithole-Moloi also handed over 15 water tanks that will ensure that the villages of KwaJimane have access to clean water.
The department has allocated a budget of just over R20 million to implement the project. Local residents have also benefited through employment opportunities, as they will be working with the contractor.
Introducing the contractor to the community of KwaJimane, Sithole-Moloi emphasised the government’s commitment to providing basic services to newly-developed communities through the government’s land restitution programmes.
She reiterated that the department, through various programmes such as the Integrated National Electrification Programme (INEP) and Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG), would continue to connect more communities.
“As our communities grow as a result of land restitution programmes, we have a responsibility as a department to assist by bringing services closer to these communities. We also saw the need to provide water tanks to the villages in this area while we work on the water project. Most of the villages that have benefited from this programme are newly-established in areas that were previously farms. About four villages, including Ward 2 and 12, will benefit.
“We have set the time-frames with the contractor and will monitor the progress to ensure timely completion. We also appeal to the community to take care of the infrastructure, particularly electricity. We discourage illegal connections that pose a risk to human lives and also cripple the electricity supply,” said Sithole-Moloi.
The contractor will begin work immediately.
