Rampant Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders defeat Volksrust 50-0

According to Swanepoel, both the lineouts and the scrums were 'excellently executed, with a lot of the pace shown in the backline.

The Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders kicked off the 2024 rugby season with a friendly match against Volksrust Rugby Club at the Arbor Park Sports Grounds this past Friday (March 8).

Supporters came out in their numbers to witness an entertaining match that saw plenty of tries that kept fans glued to their seats.

According to Director of Rugby, Andrè Swanepoel, the Highlanders players looked fit thanks to putting in a lot of work during a six-week conditioning programme.

“I am happy with my players’ fitness levels,” he said.

According to Swanepoel, both the lineouts and the scrums were ‘excellently executed, with a lot of the pace shown in the backline, but the catching in the backline was not always up to standard.’

The Highlanders eventually ran out 50-0 winners.

The team will travel to Nelspruit this coming weekend with 18 players to participate in the Jimmy Stonehouse 10’s Tournament, while a second team will play Volksrust Rugby Club in Volksrust as a warm-up game.

Good luck to all the players!
