Health MECs visit horror crash survivors

The bus accident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning in eDumbe, when the occupants were returning from the ANC Mayihlome rally that was held in Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane, together with Mpumalanga Health MEC Sasekani Janet Manzini, visited injured survivors of the eDumbe bus accident at Vryheid District Hospital on Monday.
The bus accident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning in eDumbe, when the occupants were returning from the ANC Mayihlome rally that was held in Durban. At least nine people lost their lives, while others were treated at eDumbe CHC. Other patients were transferred to Vryheid Hospital.
The MECs engaged with three patients at this facility, with one being transferred to Grey’s Hospital for an operation. MEC Manzini explained that they have been in contact with the KZN Health MEC since they heard about the horrific incident, as some of the people who were injured are from Mpumalanga. ‘’We appreciate the good work that has been done by the health workers. We have agreed that we will not transfer the patients to Mpumalanga, but we will allow them to be treated and be operated on here. Once they are ready for discharge, they will be handed over to us in Mpumalanga and given the necessary treatment. With the issue of postmortem results, we are working together with them so we are able to assist the families with the purpose of the burial.’’
MEC Simelane mentioned that, “We appreciate the response-time of our team in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the co-ordination of the health workers, because they were able to respond quickly. Had that not happened, we don’t know what the outcome would have been. So we really appreciate the work they have done. We also want to send our condolences to the families of the comrades who passed on in the accident.”
Simelane concluded by saying that drivers are urged to be extra vigilant on the roads; if necessary and if possible, they should take time out to relax before proceeding with their journey.
