Hope High woes: raw sewage continues to spill on school grounds

A sewage spill from a nearby blocked station has turned an adjacent field into a swamp which has flowed into the sports grounds used by the lower grades.

For seven years Hope High School in Ncandu Park has been dealing with an unsightly and unsanitary eye sore, prompting the school to urge the Advertiser to make their plight public.

“Imagine this stench right next to our Grade R class – this is what we have to deal with,” said Hope High deputy principal, Mr Nthangase.

The school has no option but to cordon off the field to keep learners safe.

An overpowering stench had made teaching in the Grade R classes unbearable.

“It is worrying because when the children from the lower grades play around here, their balls sometimes accidentally get thrown into the contaminated grounds and the students walk into the sewage to do the retrieving.”

Ntshangase said he began reporting the issue to the municipality back in 2017.

“We pestered them so much that they finally came to meet us, along with the then municipal manager who made promises to fix the situation but up until now, nothing has been done.”

When approached, the municipality communications spokesperson asked for time to communicate with the relevant department. They then assured the Newcastle Advertiser that the situation had been escalated to the sanitation department but up until now, the matter has not been resolved.
